Start with one decoration box
Take out your decorations so you can see the whole collection. Separate what you want to use this year from what will stay in storage. You do not need to put everything on display.
Inspect string lights before use and follow the manufacturer's instructions. Set aside any with damaged wires or connectors. Check your existing collection before choosing new decorations.
Check tableware and gift wrapping
Think about how many people will be at the table and what you actually need. Count plates and glasses, then find the tablecloth and napkins. Everyday tableware may be enough for a small celebration.
Look through stored bags, paper and ribbons. Keep wrapping that is still in good condition. Write down what is missing for your plans rather than for a perfect picture.
Clear box names
- New Year — string lights
- New Year — ornaments
- Celebration — tablecloth and napkins
- Gift wrapping — paper and ribbons
Clear the places you will use
Choose a few areas: the dining table, a spot for decorations and the entrance for coats. Move only things that get in the way. A full cupboard clear-out can wait.
If you move items temporarily, put them in one labelled box. Note the exact location, such as the bottom shelf of the bedroom wardrobe. It will be easier to return them afterwards.
Save photos and clear names
Photograph decorations, tableware and wrapping supplies. In My Stuff, add names and group items into virtual boxes that match their actual storage locations.
Before buying something, open your list and then check the real stock: a record can become outdated. Update descriptions and box membership when you move or use items.
Plan storage after the holidays
When putting decorations away, keep wires from tangling and protect fragile items. Use suitable containers and packaging, following the recommendations for each item.
Update the photo and contents list before closing the box. Use names such as New Year — string lights or Celebration — tableware. Leave yourself an understandable system for next year.
